Over the 130 years since its founding, Shimadzu has been providing society with high technology and high value added products centered around measuring instruments, medical systems, aircraft equipment, and industrial machinery under the corporate philosophy of "Contributing to Society through Science and Technology". At the same time as propagating activities to conserve the environment under the slogan of "For the Well-being of Mankind and the Earth", we have also been developing and supplying products related to the environment such as environmental monitoring systems.
Environmental Conservation Activities
Since establishing the "Global Environmental Code of Conduct" in 1994 we have been striving to maintain an environmental management system, and in June 1997 the Sanjo Works, our main factory, and in 1998 the Hadano Works, obtained the ISO14001 accreditation. The establishment of environmental management systems in both Japan and overseas workplaces will continue to be promoted.
Attaining ISO14001 Accreditation
Henceforth, design that attaches greater importance to recycling will be expanded to cover all our products. Furthermore the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) Method will be introduced to aim for the development and manufacture of "Environmentally Friendly Products". In conjunction with this we intend to further develop our environment related businesses to contribute to the betterment of the global environment.
Workshop in Malaysia
As one link in our active support of overseas environmental activities, Shimadzu has supported the United Nations University's Environmental Governance Project from its first term, and is now continuing this support into the third term. We have contributed funds and provided loans of analytical instruments, as well as supporting symposiums and cooperating on the implementation of training workshops. Our company's specialized environmental analysis technology and know-how have been actively utilized in this project. We are currently supporting surveys and research in each participating country, and are involved in analytical technology transfer in East Asia.
