Abstract

The progression of osteoporosis increases the risk of fragility fractures caused by forces as slight as a minor trauma. However, vertebral compression fractures, a kind of fragility fracture, may be asymptomatic. Therefore, secondary fractures occur as osteoporosis progresses, increasing the risk of proximal femoral fractures. Early diagnosis of the initial vertebral fracture is important for its prevention. The quantitative measurement (QM) method determines vertebral fractures quantitatively from lateral radiographic images of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae, but the measurement task is cumbersome and time consuming. We have developed the Smart QM software to facilitate the QM method of vertebral body measurements for quick evaluations of vertebral body fractures.
