Mapping Analysis of Lead-Free Compatible PCBs

With the implementation of the EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS), the analysis of toxic elements in electrical and electronic equipment has become increasingly important. As X-ray fluorescence spectrometry permits the easy and rapid non-destructive analysis of solid, powder, and liquid samples, it is widely used as a screening method.

A lead-free compatible printed circuit board was analyzed by an Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) fluorescence spectrometer. After detecting lead (Pb) by mapping analysis, additional measurements were conducted where the lead was detected.

X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (EDX-GP)

This instrument irradiates the foreign matter with X-rays and measures the energy of the generated fluorescent X-rays to determine the type and content of the elements comprising the foreign matter. It is extremely effective for the rapid and easy identification of metals and other inorganic substances.
