Organotin Compounds in Fish

Organtins, such as tributyl tin (TBT) and triphenyl tin (TPT), are widely used as antifouling paint on ships and fishing nets. However, TBT and TPT cause environmental pollution and can be found in fish and shellfish. Their accumulation in seafood is a problem. An example of the analysis of organotins by GC/MS, which offers high qualitative accuracy, is introduced below.

Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer

The electron ionization (EI) method is widely used for ionization in gas chromatograph mass spectrometers (GC/MS). However, the negative-ion chemical ionization (NCI) method allows ultra-high-sensitivity detection of residual organochloride and organophosphate pesticides in foods. The NCI method detects negative ions generated from the sample molecules using a reaction gas. It is as effective as ECD for detecting electron-affinitive compounds.
