External Support

We continuously implement external support activities for the purpose of improving the environmental response capability of external stakeholders, raising environmental awareness and making environmental contributions in regional communities.
For the year 2015, as many as 1,703 employees participated in these activities, providing support for various environmental activities on 72 occasions targeting 2,949 people around the country,
Many of our efforts include the holding of visiting lectures regarding the environment at educational institutions, acceptance of visitors to factories, cleanup activities in the areas surrounding our sites, and giving lectures at seminars. As one of our unique efforts, we have an environmental activity team consisting of female employees in Japan called “Eco-Club,” which develops environmental teaching tools and provides visiting lectures regarding the environment to elementary schools and others.
In 2015, the Eco-Club received the Corporate Activity Award at the 13th Kyoto Environmental Award for its long-standing efforts.

The Story of Water – A Topic for On-Site Environmental Workshops

Workshop on the Story of Water

Workshop on the Story of Water

A collaboration between the Shimadzu Hands-On Analysis School sponsored by the General Administration Department and the On-Site Environmental Workshop program sponsored by the Global Environmental Management Department has resulted in presenting classes at elementary schools entitled “The Story of Water”.
In the first period of the class, the Global Environmental Management Department teaches about global water issues. Then all the students use Pack Test materials to perform an experiment about water pollution. In the second period, the General Administration Department shows how to use a Shimadzu instrument (UV-VIS spectrophotometer) to analyze the water from the experiment performed in the first period. The spectrophotometer analyzes samples using light. Therefore, the children are also taught about light.

Comments from Outside Shimadzu

Due to the rapid economic growth in Palembang, Indonesia, on the Island of Sumatra, where I volunteer, the city is overflowing with garbage and there was a cry of environmental education. However, we were just
getting started and had no educational tools that allowed learning about the environment while playing, like in Japan. Therefore, when we learned about Shimadzu's activities, we asked whether Shimadzu would provide the environmental game made by the Eco-Club to the environmental volunteers here in Indonesia. The game provides significant knowledge and allows learning while having fun, so the students are very happy with it.
The game also allows us to teach the students about environmental activities in everyday life in Japan.

JICA training session

JICA training session

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan Cooperation Center, Petroleum (JCCP), and other organizations accept trainees from developing countries to teach them about Japanese industrial technology. Since many are intended to provide environmental technology, Shimadzu, which has the analytical instruments and expertise, has been cooperating with such programs to train about 100 people per year. This training teaches about environmental management and environmental monitoring technology, demonstrates water quality analyzers and equipment, and so on.
