PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) is the generic name for organofluorine compounds. Due to properties such as their heat, water, and oil resistance, PFAS have been used in a wide range of products, including water and stain resistant clothing, foam fire extinguishing agents, electronic devices, and food packaging since the 1950s. PFAS are also called “forever chemicals” because of their resistance to degradation in the natural environment or in living organisms.
Because these chemical substances persist in the environment for such a long time, there is concern that they may be harmful to ecosystems or human health.
