December 12, 2024 | News & Notices Silver Certification on the “PRIDE Index” an LGBTQ+ Related Initiative

On November 14, Shimadzu Corporation obtained silver certification on the “PRIDE Index,” an evaluative system for initiatives related to LGBTQ+ and other sexual minorities (hereinafter “LGBTQ+”) in business. This certification was formulated by the association “work with Pride” as an evaluative index for initiatives involving LGBTQ+ in the workplace for the first time in Japan in 2016. Its purpose is to realize in Japan the creation of a work-friendly workplace for LGBTQ+ individuals, exceeding the framework of businesses and organizations. Companies are evaluated on five indices consisting of Policy (behavior and declarations), Representation (community of interested parties), Inspiration (public awareness), Development (human resource systems and programs), and Engagement/Empowerment (social contributions and external relations).

Shimadzu established “WiSH,” a diversity promotion project, in 2015, and in 2022, the Human Resources Development Department in the Human Resources Department established a diversity & inclusion promotion group (currently the DE&I*1 Group). Initiatives to promote understanding include inviting LGBTQ+ related lecturers to provide lectures, providing in-house screenings of movies with LGBTQ+ themes, and distributing ALLY*2 stickers. Based on themes identified in opinion polls of our employees, we have introduced a point of contact for consultations with experts outside of the Shimadzu, thereby strengthening initiatives for LGBTQ+ employees, business partners, and other stakeholders.

Shimadzu Corporation has established “Embrace Differences, Include One and ALL” as the DE&I promotion slogan for the Shimadzu Group. DE&I activities have encouraged the embracing of differences with respect to various personal attributes, perspectives, and values, so as to use individual strengths to achieve a stronger organization. We will continue to aim for the creation of a workplace in which everyone can be themselves and work with confidence, by updating our systems and organizational environment.
