December 9, 2024 | News & Notices Received the SDGs Strategy/Economic Value Award at the Nikkei SDGs Management Awards

Shimadzu Corporation received the SDGs Strategy/Economic Value Award at the 6th Nikkei SDGs Management Awards. Nikkei SDGs Management Awards recognize advanced companies that have both contributed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations and enhanced corporate value through their business. Based on the results of the Nikkei Comprehensive Sustainability Survey, a judging committee comprised of external experts comprehensively evaluates initiatives of 887 companies, mainly listed companies, that respond to the survey. The SDGs Strategy/Economic Value Award, which is a category award, selects companies that excel in policy, reporting and communication, promotion system and internal penetration, contribution through business, and business performance. This is the first time we have received this award. In the SDGs Management Survey, which comprehensively evaluated the results of the Nikkei Comprehensive Sustainability Survey, we received the highest five-star rating (deviation value of 70 or more).

The Shimadzu Group has established the Shimadzu Group Sustainability Charter based on its corporate philosophy “Contribute to Society through Science and Technology” and its management principle “Realizing Our Wishes for the Well-being of Mankind and the Earth.” In the medium-term management plan, we have set “Pursue the Planetary Health” as our vision, and we are developing our business in four domains of social value creation: Healthcare, Green, Material, and Industry.

In the Green domain, we are addressing the problem of organic fluorine compounds (PFAS) and microplastics, which can have a negative impact on ecosystems. In the former, we analyze the types and concentrations of components potentially exist in water, soil, food, and the human body using our liquid chromatograph mass spectrometers. In the latter, we launched the MAP-100, the world’s first automatic pretreatment unit where the process of extracting and collecting microplastics in oceans, rivers, lakes, and other is automated. They are both useful for identifying the source and monitoring, contributing to the elucidation and resolution of environmental and health problems. In addition, from 2023, we are using environmentally friendly cellulose fiber reinforced flame-resistant composite resin for the configuration units of liquid chromatographs. This resin is a functional material created based on GREEN CHIP CMF*1 developed collaboratively by Tomoegawa Co., Ltd. (Chuo City, Tokyo) and FP Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. (Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture)*2.

As an initiative to support our business activities, we are building partnerships with our business connections in accordance with the Shimadzu Group CSR Procurement Guidelines, which were revised in 2023. The guidelines define the items that both Shimadzu Group and companies in the supply chain should address together to fulfill our social responsibilities in the five areas: human rights and labor, health and safety, the environment, ethics, and BCPs (business continuity plans).

In order to realize a sustainable society, the Shimadzu Group will solve social issues through its business activities while engaging in responsible activities as a member of society. By working with our partners around the world, we will take on the challenge of solving social issues on a global scale, aiming to create a bright future and create corporate value.
