October 21, 2024 | News & Notices Shimadzu Products and Artwork Receive Good Design Awards

Shimadzu Corporation is the recipient of 2024 Good Design Awards (sponsored by Japan Institute of Design Promotion) for the GCMS-QP 2050 gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, the Brevis GC-2050 gas chromatograph, and the science art “WONDER POWDER.” This award is known as the only comprehensive design evaluation and promotion mechanism in Japan, that carries on the Good Design Product Selection System established in 1957, and many companies and organizations both within Japan and overseas participate in it. The objective is to discover designs that improve the development of industry and the quality of our lives from the various fields around us, and to communicate them widely.

Evaluation of the Adjudicating Committee

GCMS-QP 2050 Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer

Freedom of installation location and testing environment have been improved compared with previous models by greatly reducing the size. In addition, the clear division of contrast on the front panel not only imparts a sharp visual impression, but also appropriately guides the operation of the user, and expresses the design of the series. Detailed usability improvements and detailed rationality have been incorporated, such as the opening/closing lid with the lock function eliminated, so it has been evaluated that this is the culmination of analytical instruments provided over 50 years.

Brevis GC-2050 Gas Chromatograph

This is a design with which the work efficiency in a laboratory is comprehensively improved. While pursuing compactness, the exterior material has been selected to give a uniform visual impression when multiple instruments are lined up. The model is highly evaluated for its ease of introduction to the laboratory thanks to the compact size of the main unit achieved by reviewing the internal configuration of the instrument, the reduced electrical power consumption and gas usage, and the improvement of operability without reliance on individual experience. Further contributions to the research activities to create a sustainable future are expected in the research field.

Science Art “WONDER POWDER”

This is a very interesting exhibit in which various materials are made into powder, placed in a liquid, then you can experience and feel “beauty” while operating it with your hand. This is a good approach for creating interest in science for all generations, by communicating “beauty,” without difficult explanations. It is also good that immediately beside where the beauty is experienced, the data is provided. It would be even more exciting if we could participate from the process of making the powder.
