Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers - Safe and Easy to Use Even for Inexperienced Operators
Shimadzu products and technology support our daily lives and activities. Today, we introduce atomic absorption spectrophotometers (AA)!
These instruments are often adopted as the first step in elemental analysis. For a familiar example, they are used to measure the amount of calcium contained in milk.
Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers
Atomic absorption spectrophotometers (AA) are commonly used to determine the type and concentration of inorganic elements in liquid samples. They make use of the fact that elements absorb light at specific wavelengths.
These instruments are used not only in the food industry, but also for environmental, pharmaceutical, and chemical analysis. They have advantages over other elemental analyzers in that they have a smaller installation footprint, can be easily introduced, provide excellent throughput, and offer low running costs. Accordingly, they are often chosen as the first instrument for elemental analysis.
Shimadzu has sold AA systems since 1968. We have the top class share of the Japanese market and are expanding market share outside of Japan.
Determining the Concentration of Calcium in Milk Using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers
The measurement of calcium in milk is an example of how an AA system can be applied to something familiar. Milk is widely known as a food product that contains calcium. Because calcium is a mineral and inorganic, it can be measured with AA systems.
A large number of AA systems are installed and utilized for R&D and QA/QC departments in dairy product companies, as well as in contract research laboratories specializing in food analysis.
Shimadzu’s New AA Systems Accommodate a Variety of Analytical Demands
To expand our global share of the AA spectroscopy market, Shimadzu released the new AA-7800 series in June 2022. These are the world’s smallest dual system models compatible with two measurement systems (as per in-house investigation). They feature flexible expandability, easy operation, and compactness.
Although these products are sold worldwide, they are produced at our manufacturing site in Suzhou, China to promote “local production for local consumption”. China is the largest market for AA systems. Demand for AA systems in the pharmaceutical and environmental markets is expected.
Staff at the Spectroscopy Business Unit of the Analytical & Measuring Instruments Division responsible for their development had the following to say.
AA systems are used in various industries, including food & beverage, environmental, pharmaceuticals, and materials, as well as in educational institutions. The atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) technique has been adopted for many official test methods, so we expect strong demand for these systems in the future.
The concepts behind the new AA-7800 series are “Any Application,” “Any User,” and “Any Location.” They are compatible with a wide range of uses and provide comprehensive safety features and enhanced operation, enabling even novices to use them with confidence. Thanks to their features, they can be installed in many different types of environments and analytical operators can work more flexibly through remote data management. We hope that they will be used by as many customers as possible.
