SHIMADZU CORPORATION has signed the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) advocated by the United Nations, and joined the Global Compact Network Japan, a local network in Japan.
The UNGC is a voluntary initiative for companies and organizations around the world to act as good citizens of society and achieve sustainable growth by demonstrating responsible and creative leadership. Advocated by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan at the World Economic Forum (Davos Conference) in 1999, it was formally established in July 2000. As of September 18, 2019, there were 338 organizations in Japan and 13,718 organizations in 159 countries around the world.
As a global manufacturing enterprise upholding the corporate philosophy "Contributing to Society through Science and Technology" we SHIMADZU CORPORATION has, since its founding over 140 years ago, challenged to resolve the social issues of each age.
With this signing of UNGC, we once again express a stance to support the 10 principles of UNGC consisting of human rights, labour, environment and anticorruption. We will further raise the awareness of each and every employee regarding the resolution of social issues, and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through our business.
10 principles of the United Nations Global Compact
Human Rights
Principle 1 | : | Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and |
Principle 2 | : | make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses. |
Labour
Principle 3 | : | Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining; |
Principle 4 | : | the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour; |
Principle 5 | : | the effective abolition of child labour; and |
Principle 6 | : | the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation. |
Environment
Principle 7 | : | Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges; |
Principle 8 | : | undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and |
Principle 9 | : | encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies. |
Anti-Corruption
Principle 10 | : | Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery. |
