Strategic Product Released to Expand the Medical Systems Business in North America
R/F System for U.S. Market
In November, Shimadzu started selling a newly developed FLUOROspeed X1 edition R/F system operable from the patient-side in the United States. The patient-side FLUOROspeed X1 edition is a strategic product intended to expand business in North American markets, which is one of the growth strategies of the Medical Systems Division. This patient-side R/F system expands our product line of R/F systems in addition to the existing remotely operated R/F systems.
Patient-side models are operable by a physician or radiological technologist standing next to the R/F table, so that they can care for the patient while operating the system. The new product is offered to satisfy such requirements, which are mainly required in the United States. To expand sales and expand the Medical Systems business, Shimadzu intends to sell ten units in FY 2019, 50 units in FY 2020 and 80 units in FY2021, mainly in North American markets. The new product will be displayed at the exhibition held concurrently with the Radiological Society of North America Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting, held in Chicago from December 1 to 6.
Features
1. Provide High Image Quality with Low X-Ray Dose
The quality of X-ray images are generally proportional to the X-ray dose applied, so that attempting to increase image quality can cause problems with higher X-ray dose levels. Therefore, Shimadzu has been developing a variety of approaches for minimizing X-ray dose. Accordingly, the new FLUOROspeed X1 edition model features Shimadzu’s SCORE PRO Advance image processing technology with real-time noise reduction, which improves image visibility even at low X-ray dose levels. That means it can achieve both lower X-ray dose levels and higher image quality at the same time.
2. Examine Large and Bariatric Patients Smoothly
The R/F table is designed for static loads up to 301 kg (665 lbs.) and dynamic loads up to 226 kg (500 lbs.), so that even large patients can be examined without worry. Also, the X-ray tube and detector mechanisms offer a large operating range that enables whole body fluoroscopy/radiography for supporting a variety of examinations.
3. Safely Examine Swallowing Studies in Elderly Patients
Given the progressively aging population in the United States, there is increasing demand for swallowing examinations. To ensure swallowing can be examined safely and smoothly even for older patients seated in a wheelchair, the patient positioning space during examinations was increased 60% compared to the existing products, to provide up to 80 cm (31.5 inches) of examination space.
4. Power-Assist Technology Ensures Easy Operability
The product features Shimadzu’s proprietary GLIDE ASSIST power-assist technology, so that the physician or radiological technologist can easily operate the system with one hand while also caring for the patient in the examination room.
5. Both R/F and General Radiography Systems can be Integrated in the Same System
To improve examination efficiency, examination rooms in the United States are often equipped with both an R/F system and a general radiography system. The new FLUOROspeed X1 edition can be configured to integrate the functionality of both systems in a single system.
