Exhibition at ICHIZA KYOTO, the Kansai Pavilion Kyoto Zone of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan

As one aspect of our 150th anniversary commemorative project, Shimadzu Corporation has manufactured four concept models that integrate our products with the traditional craft art techniques of Kyoto. The traditional handicrafts of nishijin-ori weaving, kyo-yuzen (dyeing), kyo-shikki (lacquerware), and kintsugi (golden repair) have been applied to the Nexera series of high performance liquid chromatographs, the Brevis GC-2050 gas chromatograph, the MobileDaRt Evolution MX8 Version mobile X-ray system, and the BresTome head and breast TOF-PET system.

On March 31, Shimadzu celebrated its 150th anniversary. While working as a Buddhist altar craftsman, Shimadzu’s founder, Genzo Shimadzu, studied Western physical and chemical science at Kyoto’s Physics and Chemistry Research Institute. In this way, Shimadzu took its first steps as a manufacturer of precision instruments, including X-ray systems and chromatographs. The four above-mentioned models embody the 150 years of history at Shimadzu of fusing Japanese spirit with Western learning. With Craftech as the guiding concept, care has been taken in their design, including the colors, patterns, and materials, to ensure not only the appeal of functional value but also that a sense of attachment to the brand and our products is created.

Note that in 2019, Shimadzu signed a Comprehensive Collaborative Agreement for the Revitalization of the Kyoto Region with Kyoto Prefecture, and measures have been taken to date, including the manufacture of aroma defusers using kyo-shikki. The above-mentioned concept models manufactured will be displayed at ICHIZA KYOTO, the Kansai Pavilion Kyoto Zone of the 2025 Japan International Exposition (Osaka-Kansai Expo). The exhibition will be held from June 16 (Monday) to June 22 (Sunday).
