The Aircraft Equipment Division of Shimadzu Corporation and the Japan Branch Office of Shimadzu Precision Instruments, Inc. (SPI) exhibited a booth at the Japan International Aerospace Exhibition 2024 (JA2024), held from October 16 to 19 at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition hall.

Japan International Aerospace Exhibition 2024 (JA2024)

JA2024 is Japan’s largest international exhibition of the latest technologies and businesses in the aerospace industry. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was held for the first time in 6 years, with over 600 companies and groups hosting booths. During the 4 days of the exhibition, it attracted 37,168 visitors, such as representatives from various companies, government institutions, embassies, and industries throughout the world.

New Products Exhibited at the Shimadzu Booth

Based on its vision of operating businesses that contribute to the safety and security of society, the Shimadzu Corporation Aircraft Equipment Division exhibited three product lines: air management systems, flight control systems, and cockpit display systems. All these product lines are critical components for ensuring aircraft can fly safely and are made using unique Shimadzu technologies.

In particular, a new helmet-mounted display (HMD) system for helicopters, released in October, was also exhibited at JA2024. Primarily intended for emergency rescue activities, the helmet-mounted device can display various information directly within the pilot’s field of vision. Maneuvers for hovering close to the ground without moving are dangerous due to the risk of hitting overhead powerlines or transmission towers. The new HMD system can detect obstructions with sensors and warn the pilot by displaying a warning within the pilot’s field of vision.

Shimadzu’s Involvement in Aircraft Equipment Extends Back about 90 Years

Shimadzu Corporation began supplying aircraft-related components in 1936, when the development and manufacturing of aircraft was just budding as an industry in Japan. Shimadzu’s aircraft equipment business expanded along with the growth in the aircraft industry in Japan, becoming a division in 1957. A new plant was established in Kyoto.

About 90 years later, after refining our technical capabilities and expanding our product lines, the Aircraft Equipment Division today is participating in projects of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and is involved in developing the next generation of aircraft, such as by electrifying, decarbonizing, and improving the energy efficiency of aircraft.

Comment from the Person in Charge of the Shimadzu Booth at JA2024

I am so grateful that there were more visitors this year than 6 years ago.

In addition to the main aircraft components offered by the Shimadzu Aircraft Equipment Division, there were also many customers interested in the new helicopter HMD system exhibited at the booth. The Public Day, when many people from the general public visited the exhibition, provided a valuable opportunity to promote a deeper understanding of Shimadzu’s aircraft equipment business.

In the future as well, we remain committed to deploying a variety of new measures intended to achieve a safe and secure society.
